Sweden is closing in on a bronze medal at the 2022 World Junior Championships. The country has racked up the third-most medals in world junior history with 20, and the Swedes have only won gold twice and not since 2012.
The team faces another tough test at the 2023 World Juniors. They are one of the top four favorites to win the tournament, but there are already some concerns about the roster.
Sweden released its roster for the 2023 World Juniors earlier this month and one name was notably missing. Simon Edwinsson, the No. 6 pick in the 2021 draft, will not be in the Maritimes for the tournament. The top Swedish defenseman elected to pass on the playoffs, instead remaining in Grand Rapids with the Red Wings AHL team.
Additionally, Sweden is without defenders Elias Salomonson and Mattias Hävelid, both of whom are out with injuries. Accordingly, Sweden’s blue line was without three players who could have played the best minutes.
The Djurgårdens IF trio of Liam Öhgren, Noah Östlund and Jonathan Lekkerimaki have a lot to like up front, including all first-round picks in 2022. One name to keep an eye on is big, talented center Leo Carlsson. Expected to compete for the top five picks in the 2023 NHL Draft. While offense may be Sweden’s weakness in the 2022 tournament, it shouldn’t hinder the team in the winter.
Jesper Walstedt is not in net for Sweden this time around as the Wild prospect pulled out of the tournament. He won the best goalie award in the 2022 World Junior Tournament. It’s likely that Vegas draft pick Carl Lindbaum will lean on the network for more time.
