NORTHBOROUGH – America’s best self-defense studio has been providing community martial arts and self-defense training since 2018. For young students, the studio offers a military program designed to teach discipline, respect and confidence. For adults, the focus is on Krav Maga, a self-defense program used by the Israeli Defense Foundation. Manager Jimmy Sheridan says students in Krav Maga are taught how to defend themselves in a dangerous situation.
“Krav Maga teaches students the best options for staying safe and on their feet in most scenarios, such as when an attacker draws a weapon.”
Going through martial arts and self-defense training provides a foundation for building confidence in other areas of life.
“We get to see people’s confidence grow. Parents see it in their kids, and adults also experience greater confidence in their lives,” said Sheridan. “It’s the best feeling in the world, knowing our work has such an impact on our students.”
America’s Best Defense is also committed to adapting to the needs of its students and being able to serve students throughout the pandemic.
“During the pandemic,” Sheridan said, “we had the ability to support our families.” “With half an hour a day, the kids have focus and structure through their defense lessons. It also gave parents a break from work.
Throughout the year, America’s best defense finds ways to help the local community. Each October, the study raises funds for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. In November, the studio held its own Thanksgiving fundraiser and raised funds to purchase Thanksgiving dinners for local churches.
“We loaded the food into trucks and delivered it to the churches,” said Sheridan. “We usually provide over 600 dinners each year.”
Instructors at America’s Best Defense are scheduled to train at least twice a week, and guest speakers are often invited. Joel Manby, author of Works of Love, recently spoke to instructors.
Mamby believes that serving others is the best way to do business: “We get results by doing the right thing for our customers and employees; but the fruits are not limited in themselves. It pays to do the right thing – over and over again.
Sheridan believes in achieving balance in three areas: Home, work, and social places where they can be themselves.
“We always want to be a place that puts our students first, so everyone feels like this is their place,” Sheridan said.
That consistency and level of belonging contribute to the confidence that students gain in their studies.
“Defense training is kind of like wearing a seatbelt,” Sheridan said. “You don’t start your car expecting to need seatbelt protection, but if an accident happens, you’ll be glad you used it.”
